1. Is the Studio close to transit?
Yes! Waterfront Skytrain Station is 2 blocks away!
2. Is there parking near your studio?
Yes! There is metered street parking but it is strictly enforced. We recommend parking at the nearby Easypark car park at 160 Water Street (between Cambie and Abbott) or at 150 West Pender Street (between Cambie and Beatty). http://www.easypark.ca
3. I've never had headshots taken. What should I expect to happen? What do I need to do to prepare?
In the weeks before your shoot, talk to your agent (or acting teacher, fellow actor, good friend) and decide on three distinct looks you'd audition for and would like to be photographed like. Some examples would be The Mom/Dad, The Business Man/Woman, the sexy Leading Lady/Man, College/High School Student, Girl/Boy Next Door, Quirky Sidekick, Technician/Soldier(Sci-Fi). Bring clothes that would reflect these choices. The week before, drink lots of water. The night before, get a good night sleep. On the day eat a good breakfast! You'll need the energy! Once you arrive at the Studio, you'll be met by Melanie and your MUA (makeup artist). They'll look through the outfits you brought and help you choose the ones that would photograph best. It will take approximately an hour to do hair and makeup. Then it's time to shoot your photos!!!
4. Can I consult with Melanie before the shoot?
Yes! We can talk on the phone or email ideas back and forth! I love brainstorming and building a shoot. Feel free to email me any images you love (or hate!) for inspiration!!!
5. I'm an actor, can my agent consult with Melanie before the shoot?
Absolutely! In fact, Melanie recommends involving your agent in the process as the best way to achieve results satisfying for all parties. Just ask Melanie to give your agent a call to get things started!
6. How long does the session usually last?
Typically a headshot or editorial session with makeup and hair can last from 3 to 4 hours. Without makeup and hair, it usually lasts 2 to 3 hours. A Cake Smash! session usually requires 45 to 60 minutes.
7. What should I bring to my photo shoot?
Bring several options for each look you want to have photographed. If you are planning on shooting 3 looks, it is wise to bring at least 6 to 9 outfits! Bring everything you will need for the outfit including socks, shoes and belts. Make sure your clothes are pressed and looking sharp. Ladies! Make sure you bring proper undergarments. Nude color bras if you are wearing a white or light colored top! Men, if you are shaving, bring your razor, shaving cream, etc.
8. Should I wear jewelry in my headshots?
Unless it is subtle (like small stud earrings) it is not recommended. Once photographed large earrings, necklaces etc has a tendency to be distracting. And you don't want anything to distract away from your eyes!
9. Can I have pictures with curly and then straight hair?
Definitely! Our MUA have all the necessary tools to make this happen. Just prepare for the extra time it will take to accommodate this.
10. Can I have pictures taken with facial hair and then shave?
Sure! The Studio has a washroom that can be used for shaving. Just make sure to bring all the shaving supplies you will need!
11. Can I have my headshots taken in studio AND outdoors?
Yes, our studio is located in historic Gastown. If the weather behaves and you would like to venture out into the alleys and cobblestone streets, this can be accommodated.
12. What is retouching?
When you've chosen the images you'd like to print or use on the web, it is time to retouch the photos. 99% of photos will need some form of retouching. Retouching includes: sharpening the photo and reducing or removing lines, dark circles, stray hairs and blemishes. We can also smooth skin and brighten eyes and teeth if needed.
13. What if I want more images retouched than what is included in my package?
We will gladly retouch and provide high-resolution copies of additional images for a fee of $10/image.
14. I want to put my pictures up on Facebook, IMDb, my website etc. Do I need to credit Melanie Kelly Photography for taking the pictures?
Yeah! We are very happy that you want to share the pictures! If you're putting the pictures on the internet, we ask that you credit the photo with "© 2011 Melanie Kelly Photography"
15. Can I have copies of the high-resolution, printable files of my shoot?
Yep! We provide high-resolution copies of the retouched images included in your package, which are suitable for printing. Please note that we do not provide high-resolution copies of unedited previews.
